City Place

Durham, NC

Formerly a municipal garage and a training facility for the City of Durham Fire Department, City Place is now Zapolski Real Estate’s headquarters and home to nearly a dozen businesses. Built in 1926, City Place is in the heart of Downtown Durham’s resurgent Warehouse District. Across the street is the Durham Athletic Park, the original home of the Durham Bulls Baseball Team. During a complete rehab in 1999, architectural details and eclectic charm were preserved as the building was brought up to modern standards for professional offices.

A unique historical feature of City Place, The Durham Fire Drill Tower was constructed in May 1926. It was designed by Durham architects Atwood and Nash, who likely also designed the main garage building. The 61 foot tall tower provided a practice facility for Durham firefighters. It included a standpipe system, smoke room, safety net, and platforms. ZR City Place acquired the complex in 1998 and restored it to its original historic beauty and charm when it was renovated in 1999.

City Place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The complex consists of three buildings plus the landmark five-story fire tower. Triangle Business Journal named City Place one of the top redevelopment projects in its Real Estate Quarterly in 2000. The Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina gave the project an Award of Merit in 2002 for City Place’s redevelopment
